Lincoln Izaak Walton League Chapter
Izaak Walton was a fisherman that lived in England over three hundred years ago. It was his namesake that our Izaak Walton League of America used back in 1922 when the nations premier conservation organization was started. Izaak symbolized a most concerned citizen with his fish and wildlife ethic. The Lincoln Chapter organized soon after in 1924, has provided a conservation voice for our wildlife resources over 82 years.
Today our chapter is host to many conservation programs, and probably the most active programs involve shooting sports. We provide the only full service shooting range within fifty miles of town. One can find opportunities to practice shooting skills with pistol, rifle and shotguns on our well-kept ranges located ½ mile south of highway 2 on 134th street. However the priority focus is on training and experience for younger shooters. We firmly believe properly trained shooters are important to our future heritage. To meet this need the Lincoln Ikes offer young hunter safety training, youth trap shooting with coaching, an orientation to shooting for youth who have passed the hunter safety course, and many individual clinics such as women in the outdoors Recently we have been able to build a 2 acre lake managed for youth fishing and aquatic education.
Our programs operate totally from a membership club. Of course to maintain the skills learned our club members enjoy the privilege of using either the 100 yard rifle range, pistol range, a five stand sporting clays range, or an automatic trap by virtue of their membership card. Most recently we have added an archery practice range available to all members to hone the archery skills needed for hunting. These facilities are operated on a self-help basis on the member’s time frame with the exception when an organized event is in progress on particular ranges.
Naturally non-members are welcome to participate in any number of organized shoots such as .22 silhouettes, 300 yard target events, ARA .22 shoots, Glock matches, handgun silhouettes, summer and fall trap leagues, highschool trap shoots, bowling pin contests and a host of other fun events. Learn everything we do at lincolnikes.org. A special event will take place on the last three Sundays before the rifle deer season, when the public is invited to sight-in days. Qualified coaches will assist any rifleman to obtain a zero with their rifle, which is pretty important for the upcoming deer hunting season. Range hours will be 9 AM to 3 PM.
The Lincoln chapter has active members working to conserve out state's wildlife resource by involvement in the Nebraska Council of Sportsmen’s Clubs and the Nebraska Sportsmen’s Foundation with our view and oversight in legislative wildlife matters and wildlife regulations as well as our environment. As one chapter of the 19 across the state we are proud of our conservation heritage while making a difference for wildlife and the environment is our mission. Membership information is available at the website, by calling (402)474-6555 or at P.O. Box 6755, Lincoln, and NE 68506.
